A Bird in Bees Clothing

A menswear blog for women.

StylePoints: Why are you in such a rush to be old?

stylepoints:

I’ve recently noticed that a disproportionate number of hasgtagmenswear bloggers are college students. To them, I say: what the fuck is wrong with you kids? You have your whole life to dress like a grown man,and a small window in which you can indulge your more whimsical side. DON’T FUCKING BLOW…

What’s up this is what I’ve been thinking about for a few weeks now. Haven’t taken off my mom’s ratty old jean jacket since then. Now is my time to dress like a fuckup (before I need people to actually hire me and take me seriously.)

ugh.. that’s in like 3 months.

This is a fun new thing I’m going to do (I would say weekly, but we all know I can’t stick to a schedule like that, so..)  It’s called The Most Overpriced Thing on the Internet. It’ll be great, I promise.
Today’s MOTOTI (yeah, I know a very cool acronym, I’m totally positive it’s going to catch on) is this pair of Balmain jeans found on net-a-porter. I am a denim addict, I have paid more for jeans than I care to say, but these are a monstrosity. At $2,275 they are absolutely the most overpriced thing on the internet. These look like they belong in the junior’s section of a Walmart. I can so easily picture some crusty over-plumped and tanned cougar strutting around in these heinous pants. I see so many middle-aged women trying to look nice while wearing weirdly faux faded rhinestone embellished jeans. Now I guess I’ll have to wonder if they in fact cost this woman 2 grand.

A METROSEXUAL IS “The darkest period in recent history when it comes to men’s wear. It was a movement pushed by girlfriends who wanted their boyfriends to look presentable, and perpetuated by Bravo.”

Both of these coats are so perfect!

Christmas Swag!! Pimp my Keychain edition
Lately I’ve been all to excited to lock and unlock doors. It’s really lame, I know. But that is mainly because I got two really awesome christmas presents both of which reside on my key chain.
1. Mint Green Victorinox Knife
hmm.. well it’s cool to have a pocket knife- all the best dudes have them, why not a pretty one for a lady?

2. Tanner Goods Key Holder Thingy
yeah, that’s the official product name on their website. Also, it matches my TG belt so they look cool together.

So I’ve had the high-heeled version of this boot for a while (in navy,) but recently I’ve been lusting over the low-heeled black jodhpurs. I’ve spent the last few days staring at them on the internet, but was really hesitant to order them- they’re so expensive! (I got the navy ones on sale last year at Gravity Pope.) I stopped by GP again today hoping they might have the black ones so I could try them on. Glutton for punishment, I know. They only had the high-heeled ones. While I did have a brief love affair with some Rosa Mosa tapestry clog boots I left defeated. (I wish I could justify those Rosa Mosa ones, so beautiful, but alas, if I’m going to spend that kind of dough on shoes they need to be ones I can wear with anything.) Anyhoo, the point of this story is that I was feeling sorry for myself, so i decided to head over to Front & Co. and pick up my consignment money from the last month. After getting paid I took a quick jaunt through the shoe section and there winking at me were the black low Hasbeens!!! IN. MY. SIZE.
Absolutely a sign that I am meant to own these amazing shoes. Oh and last but not least.. they were only $150. Not too shabby.

I had these pretty awesome Australian work boots a while back when I was working in bakery, I’ve noticed a lot of well-dressed people clomping around in them lately, and on men they are fantastic, but I prefer something a bit daintier for women. Here are a few of my favorites. The boots up top are the ones I went with, from Free People.

Dr Martens

Marais Boot (really wishing I had the lifestyle where heeled boots were in any way practical)

Robert Clergerie Boot

I generally advocate menswear-influenced looks in the day-to-day, but sometimes it can be hard to stick with it to fancier events. I find it really difficult to be dressy but not in a dress, and still have some degree of femininity, especially if I’m not wearing heels. I’ve had a lot of events lately where I’ve had to tackle this problem, and I think I’ve finally got a formula for you all. The shopping list above is inspired by the outfit I wore to The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra the other night. I bought these really incredible wool trousers by Paperboy, and they’ve become my new staple for semi-formal occasions. I like to dress this up with a top that has a more feminine pattern, and nice sweater or jacket, some cute socks and brogues or loafers.

Sidenote

So I just watched the season finale for Project Runway…

How is it possible Anya won? She may as well have sent all her models down the runway in uncut skeins of fabric all drapey-like.
